Clitherow, Margaret

Clitherow, Margaret
(c. 1556–86)
   Saint.
Clitherow was born Margaret Middleton and was a native of York. Although she was brought up as a Protestant, in 1574 she converted to Roman Catholicism. She refused to attend the parish church, she organised a school for young children and she illegally harboured priests. Although her husband John remained a Protestant, he chose to ignore her activities. Eventually she was arrested and, because she refused to plead either guilty or not guilty to the charge, she was crushed to death, in accordance with the laws of the time. She was canonised in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.
